JOB SUMMARY:
The Trails and Open Space Ranger (Seasonal) provides educational and informational support to the public accessing Park Citys open space and trails and civil enforcement of applicable trails and open space ordinances and policies. The Trails and Open Space Ranger performs a variety of administrative duties associated with the day-to-day operations of the Trails and Open Space Department.
TYPICAL DUTIES:
Provides a physical presence on Park Citys open space properties, and trails, providing information including but not limited to rules and regulations, user etiquette, safety, and directions; this presence may be by vehicle patrols, biking, hiking, or skiing (winter).
Provides civil parking enforcement at trailheads or in conjunction with trails and open space access.
Assists the Trails and Open Project Manager as needed and coordinates responsibilities for the implementation, maintenance, and compliance of the Citys extensive trails system and open spaces.
Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled labor including but not limited to installing signs, maintaining wayfinding pavement markings, installing bike racks, and maintaining and installing trailhead infrastructure.
Oversees Open Space-related vendors who work under the direction of the Trails and Open Space Project Manager.
Collects and analyzes data associated with the scope of open space and trail use.
Attends meetings with stakeholders, advocacy groups, residents, and adjacent jurisdictional entities as it applies to open space and trail enforcement efforts.
Prepares various documents, including but not limited to reports, maps, brochures, requests for proposals, and contracts, as well as information needed to promote trails and open space.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience in Outdoor Recreation or a related field.
Physical ability to patrol and provide presence on a daily basis on the trails, including but not limited to hiking, biking, and skiing.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
2 years of experience in open space or trails related work.
Certifications in open space and trail-related fields.
Wilderness First Responder Certification.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 75 pounds of trail equipment.
Physical fitness is a requirement for performing tasks in the field; hiking and cycling is required for patrolling, examination, data gathering, and other trail-related issues.
Work is performed primarily outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme temperatures.
Use of equipment including motorized vehicles, chainsaws, and tools, in coordination with the appropriate safety equipment is required.
Frequent exposure to stressful situations when working with community members and providing civil enforcement or regulations on the trails and open spaces.
Amplified noise levels may occur when using machinery or tools.
Hard hats, safety vests and other safety equipment are required when working around and under equipment and buildings, as well as moving vehicles and equipment on streets, parks, and fields.
May require small amounts of travel to and from meetings, trainings, and conferences.
Occasional non-traditional working hours including holidays, evenings, and weekends.
